America Insomnia Study (AIS)

The America Insomnia Survey (AIS) was a national survey of subscribers to a large health plan in the US designed to estimate the prevalence and correlates of insomnia and to collect information about diagnostic criteria for insomnia that could be used in the revision of the ICD-11 and DSM-V systems. WMH collaborators from the HMS Data Analysis Coordination Centre participated in the development of the AIS interview schedule and the validation of a brief insomnia screening scale developed for the AIS known as the Brief Insomnia Questionnaire (BIQ). The validation study, which was carried out in a probability subsample of AIS respondents, showed the BIQ to have substantial concordance with blinded clinical diagnoses of insomnia. Based on the results of that study, the AIS insomnia scale was added to the CIDI to replace the provisional assessment of insomnia originally included in CIDI 3.0.

The AIS and associated insomnia clinical reappraisal study were funded by Sanofi-Aventis Groupe. The text and scoring rules for the BIQ and the full text of the entire AIS interview schedule can be obtained by clicking the links below. The BIQ, as a part of the CIDI, is available for unrestricted scientific use.
