The University of Michigan's CIDI Training and Reference Center offers a CIDI training workshop each summer in conjunction with courses in survey methods. This workshop provides training in the use of the World Mental Health Composite International Diagnostic Interview (WMH-CIDI). The course is appropriate for principal investigators who plan to use the CIDI in research projects, study managers who will be in charge of implementing research projects, data analysts who will be working with data generated from CIDI studies, and interviewers. The workshop addresses issues in data collection, editing, coding and data cleaning and provides hands-on experience in the administration of the WMH-CIDI. It includes a set of home-study interactive CDs and three days of classroom training in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Both Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) and paper and pencil (PAPI) modes are included in the training. CAPI training includes a copy of the Blaise CAPI program, while PAPI training includes word files containing the most recent version of the instrument and a copy of the Blaise Direct Data Entry program for keypunching the interview data. Both CAPI and PAPI training includes a copy of the SAS programs to generate DSM-IV and ICD-10 diagnoses. These programs are modularized so that the entire questionnaire can be used, or a subset of the WMH-CIDI diagnoses can be selected for administration. Trainees also receive access to the restricted section of the WMH-CIDI website, so they can receive updates to the instruments and algorithms as they become available. CIDI training is also available at other times of the year for researchers whose data collection schedules do not allow them to wait until the regularly scheduled trainings. For more information, please contact Nancy Gebler at CIDI-Training@isr.umich.edu, or (815) 233-1348. Our next WMH-CIDI training session is scheduled for September 11th, 12th and 13th 2008 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.***Follow this link to find out about the public release of the US NCSR dataset and the workshop we put together to use the data! *** The cost for training is $2,500 per participant, with a discount for multiple participants from the same organization. Travel and lodging costs are not included. Training includes home-study training materials and 2.5 days of classroom training. In addition, participants will be expected to complete approximately 30 hours of home study. Secondary analysis of CIDI data: CIDI training is provided for people who want to use the CIDI to carry out data collections. There is no relationship between CIDI training and access to any datasets that might have used the CIDI in the past. If researchers have an independent relationship with a research group that has previously carried out a CIDI survey and are being provided access to those data, that is a matter between the individuals involved. The CIDI Training Center does not provide overview training in the CIDI for people who are only interested in secondary analysis. All training assumes that the trainee is being trained to conduct data collection using the CIDI questionnaire. Secondary analysts will still find the training useful, but must recognize that they will be required to participate in the exercises that involve practice interviewing and other aspects of training that assume that data collection is the goal of training.
