Social Insurance and Care of People with Mental Illness
Funder(s): MacArthur Foundation
Individuals with mental illness are disproportionately represented among the rolls of major income-support programs in the United States, but the programs typically do not include regulations or policies that might address the unique needs of the mentally ill. This project examines:
- the design of major income-support programs (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, Supplemental Security Income, Social Security Disability Insurance);
- the degree to which these income-support programs accommodate the unique features of people with mental disorders;
- the implementation of measures that may allow the programs to accommodate unique needs of people with mental illnesses.Â
