LeRoi S. Hicks, MD, MPH, is an instructor in health care policy and an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, and an attending hospitalist physician in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His major research areas include the effects of patients’ racial and cultural background on clinical outcomes of chronic disease and the effects of the physician behavior on the quality of care administered to minority populations. Dr. Hicks is currently the principal investigator on the Community, Health Center, and Academic Medicine Partnership Project (CHAMPP), which is funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The project’s goals are to assess the needs of non-Hispanic Blacks and Hispanics with hypertension or diabetes within four Boston neighborhoods and to examine the barriers and plausible approaches to improving care provided to these residents.

From 2002 to 2006, Dr. Hicks was a fellow in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Minority Medical Faculty Development Program. During the fellowship, he was principal investigator on a project entitled Impact of Case Management on Adherence to JNC VI Guidelines and Racial Differences in Blood Pressure Control. The project assessed the association of patient race with physician adherence to hypertension-management guidelines and evaluated the effectiveness of case management and computerized reminders in improving blood pressure outcomes among a hypertensive population. Dr. Hicks is also a recipient of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Minority Faculty Development Award.

Dr. Hicks graduated from Howard University with a major in medical technology. He received his MD from Indiana University and completed his MPH with a concentration in clinical effectiveness from the Harvard School of Public Health.
