Bruce E. Landon, MD, MBA, MSc, is an associate professor of health care policy at Harvard Medical School and an associate professor of medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He practices internal medicine at BIDMC.

Dr. Landon focuses on three areas of research. His primary interest involves assessing the impact of different characteristics of physician and health care organizations, ranging from health plans to physician group practices, on the provision of health care services. His work in this area has included the development of a theoretical model to explain the potential impact of health care organizations on the quality of care. He is now involved in several projects that will help describe and quantify the impact of a variety of organizational characteristics and strategies, including quality-improvement strategies, on the provision of care. In related work, he is examining the impact of organizational and market characteristics on physician decision making and career satisfaction. For this work, he collaborates with several major health plans throughout the country.

Dr. Landon’s second area of research involves care for patients with HIV, and he is working on two major projects in this area. In the first, he has been studying the impact of organizational and physician factors on treatment patterns and outcomes in a national sample of AIDS patients, and in the second he is evaluating the effects of a quality-improvement collaborative aimed at enhancing quality of care for disadvantaged patients with HIV who are treated at clinics that receive funding from the Ryan White Program. This second project has led to other ongoing projects on the effects of quality-improvement collaboratives for patients with asthma, diabetes, and hypertension. His third area of research involves the experiences of state Medicaid agencies with managed care. In one component of this work, for example, he is examining how quality of care and quality management approaches change as traditional coverage changes to managed care.

Dr. Landon graduated summa cum laude from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania with a major in finance. He received his MD degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and an MBA with a concentration in health care management from the Wharton School. He also received an MSc in health policy and management from the Harvard School of Public Health.
