Congratulations to Michael Barnett, who was awarded the 2011 Daniel Ford Research Award. Michael worked in the Department of Health Care Policy for the past two years as a Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellow and is now an intern at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The national award is given by Johns Hopkins University to recognize outstanding research conducted by a resident in addressing issues in general internal medicine. The award was in honor of a research paper that will soon be published in Medical Care entitled "Physician Patient-Sharing Networks and the Cost and Intensity of Care in US Hospitals". Michael wrote this article with the assistance of HCP’s Nicholas A. Christakis, MD, PhD, MPH, Bruce E. Landon, MD, MBA, Nancy L. Keating, MD, MPH, James O'Malley, and Doctoral Candidate, Jukka-Pekka Onnela.
Michael et al. used network analysis to explore how the structure of patient sharing among hundreds to thousands of Primary Care Physicians and specialists in hospitals reflects the cost and intensity of care delivered for Medicare beneficiaries at those hospitals. Michael will present his research as part of a special Grand Rounds at Hopkins in November.Â
