Joseph Newhouse, HCP’s Professor of Health Care Policy, received the Adam Yarmolinksy Award at the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) annual meeting on October 12, 2009, for distinguished service as a member of the IOM. Over the past years, Professor Newhouse contributed significantly to the IOM’s mission to earn this high recognition.
As highlighted in the IOM’s program, Professor Newhouse won the award for being a pre-eminent academic health economist, an influential advisor to health policy makers and stakeholders, an innovator in training future generations of health care researchers, and an active participant in the IOM. Additionally, Newhouse was the founding vice chair of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission and was instrumental in creating the organization’s independence and success.Â
The IOM is very familiar with Dr. Newhouse’s work because he served two terms on the IOM’s Governing Council, chaired the Committee on Shortening the Time Line for New Cancer Treatments, and served as a member on the Board of Health Care Services and the IOM Membership Committee. Newhouse is also well known for his numerous publications focusing on Medicare and Medicaid policy.
