HCP’s Joseph P. Newhouse, PhD was recently featured on the Department’s website for his publication in Health Affairs last month entitled, “Income, Insurance, and Technology: Why Does Health Spending Outpace Economic Growth?” Now he is concentrating his efforts on type 2 diabetes. He and nine other colleagues published findings on the “The Net Value of Health Care for Patients with Type 2 Diabetes, 1997 to 2005” in the Annals of Internal Medicine. They concluded that “The economic value of improvements in health status for patients with type 2 diabetes seems to exceed or equal increases in health care spending, suggesting that those increases were worth the extra cost.” Additionally, it could not be statistically concluded that society is getting fewer services for its money, but there is definite opportunity to improve health care for patients with diabetes. For the full report, read Dr. Newhouse’s article.
