Economist Richard G. Frank, PhD, an HCP professor of health care policy, discusses the ongoing regulation of generic drugs in the November 15, 2007, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. In this Perspective, he details the effects through the years of the US Drug Price Competition and Patent Restoration Act of 1984 (called the Hatch-Waxman Act after its congressional sponsors), which established incentives for the development of generic drugs and a process for streamlined FDA approval. Congress has recently been debating certain aspects of the Act in an attempt to curb negative effects of this legislation.
