HCP’s Bruce Landon publishes new study comparing quality of care for Medicaid and commercial managed care programs

HCP Associate Professor Bruce Landon, MD, MBA, and colleagues examined performance on 11 quality indicators in Medicaid-only plans, commercial-only plans, and Medicaid/commercial plans. The indicators included prevention and screening efforts, chronic-disease management, and prenatal care. The study, published in the October 10, 2007, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that managed care programs were not successful at narrowing the quality gap between Medicaid and commercial enrollees. With one exception, overall commercial population performance exceeded overall Medicaid population performance. Also participating in the study was HCP’s Sharon-Lise Normand, PhD.
