Meredith Rosenthal is Assistant Professor of Health Economics and Policy in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Rosenthal completed her Ph.D. in Health Policy at Harvard University in 1998. Dr. Rosenthal's research and teaching are focused on three primary topic areas: mental health, provider incentives, and physician organizations. Dr. Rosenthal has studied the impact of managed behavioral health companies on the organization and delivery of mental health services. In particular, her work has looked at the impact of risk sharing and delegated utilization management on the supply of outpatient therapy. Most recently, Dr. Rosenthal has completed a study of capitated physician organizations in California that documents the use of financial incentives and other management mechanisms to influence practice patterns of member physicians. This study addresses the question of how incentives from managed care organizations are passed down to individual physicians through intermediaries such as medical groups and independent practice associations. Ultimately this research will be used to address whether particular types of arrangements are associated with higher or lower quality of care.
